A group of students at Asbury University, a Christian college in the small town of Wilmore, Kentucky, stayed behind in the campus chapel after a service one day in February. As they prayed, they claim to have felt the unmistakable presence of God. Word spread – first around the university, then beyond – via videos posted on Instagram and TikTok, which have been viewed more than 100 million times. For the next two weeks, the service didn’t stop.
Hundreds – then thousands – of people joined the collective worship. The university opened ‘overflow’ services and a large screen was put up to broadcast what was happening to the crowds gathered outside. The New York Times called it ‘the nation’s first major spiritual revival in decades – one driven by Gen Z’. It drew people in pilgrimage from across America and the world.
