The church is also seeking to adapt to a post-Christian nation while retaining its relevance. Nick Spencer of Theos, a religious think-tank, compares the current moment to 1984, just after the last time the Labour Party imploded, when many viewed the church as an unofficial opposition speaking up for those at the bottom of society. “Faith in the City”, a church report on urban poverty published in 1985, shocked Margaret Thatcher and was dismissed by one of her cabinet as “Marxist”.
