Many Christian organisations face challenges in holding onto their ethos alongside the delivery of their practical work. Some have overtly jettisoned their faith ethos. Others have allowed it to fade more quietly into history. How can Christian organisations ‘do God’ sensitively and appropriately? How do we avoid the ‘problems of proselytism’?
West London Mission has a long history of grappling with these issues through its work with homeless and marginalized people. WLM currently employs over 70 people and operates an annual budget of over £2.4 million. As well as charitable donations, it receives statutory funding from the Ministry of Justice and many local authorities. In recent years we have done a lot of work to strengthen our Christian ethos and make it more tangible.
The day will be interactive and practical and will focus on how to hold onto a Christian ethos in the delivery of their social and community work. There will also be input from Paul Bickley, author of Theos' report The Problem of Proselytism.
‘Doing God’ is for anyone who works and volunteers for, or alongside, a faith-based organisation. It will also be helpful for commissioners within government or those in other funding or regulatory bodies.
Facilitators:
Jon Kuhrt, WLM Executive Director
Rev Ruth Bottoms, WLM Social Work Chaplain
Paul Bickley, Theos, author of the report The Problem of Proselytism
