Atheists: The Origin of the Species

Atheists: The Origin of the Species

The London Institute for Contemporary Christianity Monday, 14 July 2014 from 18:30 to 20:30 (BST)

Where on earth does atheism come from?

All too often the answer is ‘science’ or ‘reason’. But is this really so?

In this evening event charting the history of atheism, Nick Spencer looks at where disbelief in God comes from and where it is going. Who were the first modern atheists and why did they reject God so angrily? How did a tiny freshwater polyp aid the growth of godlessness? Did Darwin really kill God? What was the Soviet League of the Militant Godless? Why did atheism never really take off in America? And why do atheist churches just keep on coming back?

Join LICC for a fascinating evening that will transform your understanding of atheism and help you understand unbelief – and belief – better.

Nick Spencer is Research Director at Theos, the Religion and Society Think Tank, and Visiting Research Fellow at the Faiths and Civil Society Unit, Goldsmiths, University of London. He is the author of several reports and a growing number of books, including most recently Atheists: The Origin of the Species (Bloomsbury, 2014).
