New research published by Theos reveals a growing use of religious rhetoric by party leaders in their conference speeches. What are the reasons for such a development and how should we respond?
Clearly, part of the explanation for the increase in "God talk" is due to a concern about religious extremism. Unsurprisingly, the speeches made within weeks of the 9/11 attacks included the greatest number of religious references. The party leaders were - and still are - rightly concerned to condemn religiously inspired terrorism without condemning all expressions of Islam or all Muslims.
