Economic growth and sustainability

Nick Spencer, Director of Studies at Theos, spoke today at the Visions of Prosperity seminar held by the Sustainable Development Commission.

Will economic growth deliver sustainability?  Is sustainable prosperity possible?  Is there a credible and attractive alternative to the growth paradigm?

These are the questions being asked by the Sustainable Development Commission's project Redefining Prosperity.

The main aim at today's seminar's was to explore different visions of what prosperity means - drawn from both secular and religious perspectives.

Chaired by Prof. Ian Christie, University of Surrey, co-author of From Here to Sustainability, the discussion focussed on four written thinkpieces.

Nick Spencer presented a brief response to the paper presented by Prof. Tim Kasser of Knox College (Illinois), entitled “The High Price of Materialism”.
