Nick Spencer, Director of Studies at Theos, was a guest speaker today at the Liberal Democrat Party conference.
The fringe event, entitled "Christianity and Liberalism - Compatible?", was organised by the Liberal Democrat Christian Forum in order to explore the consonance and tensions between Christianity and liberal political philosophy.
Speaking about the theological implications, tensions and compatibilities of Christianity with political liberalism, Nick Spencer described how the quest for justice and human opportunity that had marked political liberalism from its earliest days was a wholly compatible and desirable application of the gospel. However, he raised questions about how far the liberal concept of the person - autonomous, rational, and choice-based - was consistent with Christianity's more relational focus.
The talk will appear on the LDCF website soon.
