Religion in court

BBC Radio 4's religious and current affairs programme, Sunday, (29 July) and BBC1's Heaven and Earth Show (5 August) both recently explored the question of religion in court.

Over recent months, the cases of Shambo, the Hindu bull; Lydia Playfoot and the Silver Ring Thing; the Exeter University Christian Union; and the Bishop of Hereford and a gay youth worker, all received legal attention. These followed on from a number of high-profile cases over recent years of Muslim teachers and pupils who had taken their schools to court over their right to wear Islamic clothing.

"It begins to look," Sunday’s Roger Boulton said, "as if lawyers have discovered a promising new line of business – representing religious litigants in court."

Theos' Director of Studies, Nick Spencer, was among the guest interviewed for both programmes.
